ROD RAMBLING ON...ROD WRITES

Here's a potted report on the Great Langdale Marathon / Half Marathon Sunday 4th Sept 2005:

Dear All,

Where do I start?

A great big “thank you” to all my family and friends for making the day so memorable. I think you will agree the weather and new venue was brilliant – albeit too warm for the marathon!

Car parking
Not one car was parked on the road – well done. This ensures that the authorities quote the events as the benchmark in organisation and safety. But don’t slack off or I will let loose the ‘dogs of war’, Ben the Beast, Henry the Savage and our new enforcer Harold the Horrible! Speaking of parking, we have been very lucky up till now – but please check the website just before future events for alternative sites if this is necessary.
The finish for the Marathon/Half Marathon may be moved to the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel field to make it safer.

Safety of competitors
I am glad to report that Alan Niven (the competitor in the Marathon who collapsed just a hundred yards from the finish whilst in 2nd position) is now fine. I’m sure you will agree that the St John Ambulance Service and North West Air Ambulance did a splendid job.

Drinks stations
These will be re-sited and more water will be available at each. Another big thank you for depositing your used cups and bottles in the bags or at the next station. There were one or two exceptions – we are currently analysing DNA samples and suitable punishments will be meted out to the miscreants!
Thank you for acknowledging the marshals and helpers – very much appreciated (more helpers are always needed).

VERY IMPORTANT!
Due to the hot weather a number of runners had to drop out of the Marathon at the half way stage, but still crossed the finish line and so were entered as Half Marathon finishers. Not only did it give them a 15 minute advantage but it cocked the system up and is totally against Race Rules.

Medals and T Shirts
We keep costs as low as possible, as those of you who enter the sponsored “big city” events will verify – so if you want dates on your shirts or medals do it yourself! We would have to throw away the surplus after each race and charge a small fortune.

Langdale 1st Responder Community Trust
Here's what Phil Green (Treasurer) had to say about the sponsorship/raffle:
"...thank you for your efforts with the Langdale Marathon and allowing the Langdale 1st Responders to jump on the bandwagon in the way of sponsorship. The event has raised £613.90 for us, with £313 coming from sponsorship and the rest from the raffle. A magnificent result I'm sure you'll agree. This will go a long way to covering our expenses for the year. The weather was maybe a little hot on the day, even for the helpers, but certainly helped make the day for socialising afterwards on the field. The start/finish location really worked well and no doubt the pubs appreciated the extra business!"

Feedback from Runners
Here's some extracts from correspondence from runners:

Elizabeth Grayson (Otley): "First of all may I take this opportunity to say thank you very much to you and all the other volunteers who made the day so special. As hot as it was (!!) I thoroughly enjoyed the run (who couldn't in such glorious surroundings and with such friendly supporters?) and very much appreciate the efforts made by yourself and all the other volunteers.
.....Than you so much once again, to all of you involved, in making the day such a fantastic one and I am looking forward already to next year's marathon"

Tim Brookes (Captain, Warbreck Swifts, Liverpool): "Greetings Rod and congratulations on a well organised day of sport yesterday - my legs are still smarting as I write!!
.... A fantastic but testing half marathon successfully completed by two Swifts yesterday. David suffered untold damage to his 8ft 12in frame and I was reduced to tears on the Wrynose Pass.
..... I hope you were successful in getting the marathon runners back to the local asylum safely, I did see a few escape on to the fells on the second lap! It is marvellous that you are gradually integrating these nutters back into society. But seriously, I take my hat off to each and every finisher in both events, outstanding and commendable achievement all round."

I have rambled on enough for now so cheerio – keep on running.

ROD

This is the message I sent out to all entrants before the 2005 race:

Welcome one and all to our new home, the Phoenix Club is dead – long live the new Banana Grove! Those who took part in the St George’s Day 10K will testify that the move so far has been a great success. You all even managed to park without assistance – a feat I have been waiting for 16 years to witness. Well done, but don’t rest on your laurels ‘cos Scouse Henry has come down from Cloud Nine after Liverpool’s fluke in the Champions League and is straining at the bit to re-join Ragin’ Roger and Ben the Beast in enforcing any transgression in the parking department.

The usual necessary rules still apply so sorry – NO DOGS – especially in the Fun Run. Keep your race number with you at all times and memorise it, or perhaps the best bet is to staple it to your chest when it arrives.

Since the last events Billy Liar Blair has introduced some draconian legislation in the Lake District. You now have the “right to roam” almost anywhere, as long as you don’t roam at over 40mph past the speed “safety” cameras in Staveley, at over 10mph on Windemere, over 3mph exterminating vermin by hunting on the fells, and don’t drop cups or bottles at over 15mph during the race! Speaking of drinks, don’t drop them on the road – carry them a further 50 yards to the bin bags or take them to the next drinks station. Remember, we have your DNA on files, taken from your entry form, and you will be served an ASBO attached to your finishing certificate!

You should have all received your 10% discount voucher from New Balance, who will have their mobile shop on site.

Catering
We shall have a grand barbeque inside the changing marquee if by any chance it should rain. Both pubs will be serving hot and cold food so spend a few bob and help the local economy.

Prize Giving
We once again have hundreds of pounds worth of prizes, mostly donated by local businesses, and this will be held as soon as possible after the events – upstairs in the Sticklebarn Tavern. I may let the 1st man and 1st lady in both races choose their prizes, but then again I may not as it could go on all night!

Unattached/Unaffiliated Runners fees
Now £2 which we have to pass on to the NoEAA, has not been paid by a large number of entrants. If you are one of them you will not receive your race number but will have to collect it on the day when you shell out the two quid. Also, some of you have “ripped me off” by not enclosing a SAE – leaving me to pay the ten bob cost. Try doing that in the Great North Run or London Marathon – they would bin your application and pocket your cheque!

Finally, a great big thank you to all my family and friends who so willingly(?) help make the event so friendly and popular in the road race calendar. My special thanks to our prizegivers and the local St John Ambulance team who always go beyond their remit to help. And finally finally we would all like to send our love and best wishes on the retirement, from the Langdale Estate, of Frederika Johns – who has been with us from the very first race all those years ago. I really don’t know how we will manage without her.

All have a great run. Forget your stopwatch, take in the fantastic scenery – you will not run in a tougher road race.

Good luck,

Rod Berry
