It's nice to recieve
some positive feedback... here's a lovely letter from Andy Wheeler about
his experiences in the 2005 St George's Day 10K:
Dear Rod,
I would like to thank you for an absolutely brilliant St. George's Day
10k. Not only was the organisation spot on but for a new event there
was a tremendous atmosphere and warm encouragement all the way round.
Even the motorists who were held up didn't seem too miffed! I don't
know how you managed to arrange such marvellous weather too and although
it was a touch warm for running, it was lovely to sit around in the
sunshine in shorts and T-shirt without feeling cold. I'm glad that the
politically correct brigade didn't manage to ban it for celebrating
Englishness.
This wasn't my fastest 10k by any means but certainly the most enjoyable.
It was my longest run for a month following a virus that forced me to
withdraw from the London Marathon. Your race was the perfect antidote
and one day I might summon up the guts to run your marathon instead
of that soft one down south (and I speak as a Londoner).
You are very lucky to have such inspiring scenery to run through. I'm
sure that even on a cold, wet winters day, it's better than plodding
around the streets of Bolton although it's not bad up on the moors round
here. If I ever win the lottery, I won't even think of moving abroad.
Somewhere in Cumbria would suit me very well.
I'm sure to enter further events up your way although I'll probably
not be carrying a sword and shield. I suppose it's a good job the local
constabulary weren't about or I could have been arrested for carrying
an offensive weapon!

This is the message
I sent out to all entrants before the 2005 race:
"Welcome one and all to the all new all singin' and dancin' 10K Road
Race. We have 'up sticks' and moved to a new venue half way up (or is
it down?) the Great Langdale Valley.
Parking will be as directed on the fields of the hotels - where you will
see our new 'Banana Grove' marquee, for use as male and female changing.
There are plenty of toilets - but showers will need to be taken in the
nearby Mill Ghyll (Stickle Ghyll) waterfalls! Additional parking is available
next door on the National trust car park (pay and display for non-members
or those with a few bob -e.g. Wesham Road Runners!). NO PARKING WHATSOEVER
on the B5343 road or your vehicle will be vandalised by hundreds
of irate runners as well as 'Ben the Beast' and 'Ragin Roger' - Scouse
Henry's able deputies. So be early - first come best dressed.
The start will be on the road near the car parks and finish will be on
the field of the Sticklebarn Tavern. Prizegiving will be at approx. 13:15hrs
in the upstairs room of the pub.
Speaking of the course - it will be out and back to Elterwater Common
via Judy Boyes' Studio right at the Britannia Inn left at the B5343 and
back to the Sticklebarn Tavern.
As an EXPERIMENT the drinks station will have some bottled water, orange
as well as plastic cups and sponges - but if you do partake of any of
these bring your bottle and/or sponge back to the finish. DO NOT litter
our beautiful valley, or else as a punishment there will be no drinks
whatsoever for the Marathon and half Marathon on September 4th!
Results will be compiled by John Schofield and published as soon as possible
after the finish. They will appear on John's www.ukresults.net
website and a link to the results will be added to this page.
Many thanks to ALL who help make these events so 'enjoyable' - especially
my family and friends and all sponsors and the local St John Ambulance.
Keep
in training - have a great day.
ROD BERRY
P.S. If you see any DOGS lining up for the start
please inform a marshal.
